Great Brook Farm State Park
Located on the Chelmsford/Carlisle town line, all but twenty
acres of this state park are located in Carlisle. This large park of approximately 934
acres was created in the 1970's, and is a major regional open space and recreational
resource. In addition to being a significant recreational asset for Chelmsford residents,
the park is also an extension of a greenway that includes many Town-owned conservation
parcels. The park contains a great variety of habitats, including fields and forest,
several ponds and Tophet Swamp. Parking lots by the dairy barn on North Road and by the
ski barn on Lowell Street provide access to an extensive 15- mile trail system. Notable
Native American sites can be seen from these paths. Among activities allowed in the park
include non-motor boating, cross country skiing, skating, hiking, horseback riding,
fishing, and picnicking. The dairy barn is an active farm that operates year-round and
guided barn tours are available from May to October. Meadow Pond has a canoe launch and is
ideal for fishing. Access from Chelmsford is available at the southern end of Thanksgiving
Forest. Users can also enter the park from Carlisle. Location: South Chelmsford, abutting
