Middlesex Canal
Approximately 30 acres of land associated with the Old Middlesex
Canal lie in Chelmsford. This property is historically unique, as it was one of the first
canals in the United States and has been declared a "National Civil Engineering
Landmark". The Middlesex Canal connected Lowell and Charlestown, via the
Westlands and East Chelmsford. Completed in the early nineteenth century, it aided
in the textile boom occurring in Lowell, as the canal became a vital artery for
transporting textiles, other goods, and passengers to Boston. In addition to its
historic value, the canal route provides some recreational opportunity for those who wish
to walk along this scenic route or simply enjoy the scenery. The best place to view the
Canal is along Canal Street, off Riveneck Road, in East Chelmsford. The Middlesex Canal
Association is working to restore and promote the existing remnants of the Canal.
